The Academic Senate of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is hereby constituted to give the University’s governing faculty an effective voice in academic policies and in the oversight of their execution in order to advance research in medicine and allied sciences, to train successive generations of leaders in those fields, and to protect and enhance the wellbeing of people living in underserved communities of Los Angeles and of the world.
Message from the President Thomas Magee, PhD
As your Academic President my immediate goals are to improve faculty pay equity, benefits, promotions, and support for hybrid teaching and research. Together we can achieve these as well promoting our vision of ‘Excellent health and wellness for all in a world without health disparities.’
As your Academic President my strategy is simple. To promote both student success and faculty well-being. Both of these are interlinked and inseparable. Students consistently cite us as the most important reason they come to ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ. They value our teaching, research, and career advice. They often say that we care about them, their goals, and lives. We should feel proud of this but also continue to work to improve our student’s experience. Our switch to a hybrid model will bring challenges but also opportunities. I know we are up to it.
I would like to thank my fellow faculty for the nomination and strong support you have shown me. I am looking forward to serving your interests as Academic President. As I begin my term, our University faces many challenges as we navigate the Covid-19 pandemic and racial injustices endemic in our society. ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ has a strategic role in advancing our communities forward and I know we will work towards a more just society. Our Mission of addressing health disparities is central to the healing our communities need.
